Diagnosing Dry Rot
The tell tale signs of dry rot include:
- A grey or white substance that resembles cotton wool on wood or other materials in a building
- A rusty-red pancake-like growth on surfaces
- Brittle or warped wood that may have shrunk or is split with deep cracks in cuboidal shapes
- A persistent musty, damp smell.
While wood is the most common target, the effects may also be seen on plasterwork and painted finishes
on walls over time.
Because dry rot is a live fungus, it will only grow and spread if left untreated. Not only is it unsightly and unappealing to live with, it’s also considered to be one of the most serious forms of fungal decay. In its search for new food sources, this fungus will attack and destroy the structural timbers, skirting boards, flooring and door frames of any property, damaging the structural integrity of the building and leading to collapse if left for long enough.
